Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells Review

During this article I won’t be focusing on one particular model but more the range as a whole. The only variation with the different models are the size, weights and increments. So I’m aiming to be able to provide you with enough universal information on the range as whole. The main models are the 552, and the 1090.

Bowflex’s Description (552):

If you want to get a good strength workout at home, but don’t have much space, the Bowflex 552 SelectTech Dumbbells are an ideal solution. Newly designed, the innovative pair of 552 SelectTech Dumbbells combines 15 sets of weights into one using a unique dial system. It’s one of the most space-efficient and flexible strength-training options available with its unique and effective design. With just the turn of a dial, you can automatically change your resistance on each dumbbell from 5 pounds all the way up to 52.5 pounds of weight. It adjusts in 2.5-pound increments (up to 25 pounds), enabling you to gradually increase your strength without bulking up.

Technical Information:

Bowflex Adjust Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells Bowflex AdjustAs above you will have read that the 552’s can replace 15 pairs of dumbbells, but the 1090’s go from 10 – 90lbs per dumbbell. And that replace’s the need for 17 pairs! The way the SelectTech’s work is by simple turning the dial on each side to select your desired weight. This allows you to then lift of the dumbbell and the unused plates will remain in the holder. The Dial system is definitely the best I’ve come across on all adjustable dumbbells. Each turn adjust the weight by 2.5lbs for the 552’s and the 1090’s are an increment of 5lbs each turn.

The SelectTech’s plates are molded with a durable material which provides less clanging when working out. Something many adjustable dumbbells don’t have. Something to consider however is unlike the PowerBlock range the dumbbells stay the same length no matter what weight you choose. And the 552’s are 16 inches long, while the 1090’s are a whopping 17.5 inches long.

My Opinion: inc Pros & Cons:

These are without a doubt the best looking adjustable dumbbells I’ve found to date. And the protective molding is something which really has it’s benefits. However the main downfall of these is the size. 17 Inches is a long dumbbell especially when that could only be for a 10lb weight! The easy dial select system is great to use, but is it worth the impractically of the length? This is something only you can decide. Personally I’d rather use the PowerBlock‘s myself. However that being said, these do include a nice holder, and look like real dumbbells! The grip is great, and you won’t have any issues if you have larger hands. Something which you may not have heard about before however is the uneven weight distribution. As you can see the in the picture the plates aren’t a full circle, they have a cut out at the top. And when you get onto the heavier weights that part of the dumbbell is lighter meaning it can cause a rotational pull on your wrist. With all adjustable dumbbells though the main feature is that they solve the issue of having to buy many weights! And that’s what I love about all adjustable dumbbells. If you’re after a pair that look great, are comfortable, and easy to select the weights then these are for you without a doubt.

Common Questions & Costs Explained:

Do the weights come with a stand? Unfortunately not, what they do come with is the plastic holder which will hold the unused plates. This has a flat surface so it can be put down anywhere you have the space. Stands are purchased separately.

Whats the warranty? Bowflex provide a 3 year warranty with the SelectTech range.
